Back them, we decided to dye some rice blue and add cotton balls for clouds. We LOVED it! So, we found some colorful ribbon, stacked some building blocks and used the ribbon to create rainbow blocks. Then we thought a golden treasure that you discover within the sensory bin would be like the coolest thing. So, we found golden-colored treasure chests.

We thought long and hard about what we might find in a “pot” of gold at the end of a rainbow. Rosie was sure there would be a book in there — since those are among her most prized possessions. So, we found a teeny tiny book. Then we added a sparkly ring and a gem. We added a couple more gems to the bin itself, and more cotton clouds. Then we thought — what if there were a MAP?! “Like a pirate treasure map but for the rainbow?” she suggested. Say no more! We’ve now created a map. Each bin or bottle, because we went for a message in a bottle type look. comes with a map that’s been rolled and sealed for the lucky recipient to unravel. And, well, we know first-hand the disappointment of accidentally using the wrong color crayon or an unexpected rip post-masterpiece and so, a PDF of printables was created. Firstly, to have a place where grown ups can come and print more of said map. And then to have more rainbow activities because, well, why not?!

Wondering:

What are the benefits of sensory bins?

Sensory bins encourage kids to use their different senses, like: touch, sight, sounds, taste, and/or smell to learn and explore. Sensory play helps children learn to play together, socialize and talk. Sensory activities are a great way for children to learn to communicate, practice sharing, and participate in exploratory play.

How does sensory play help a child’s development?

Sensory play can help to boost a child’s language development! Sensory bins tend to be filled with different objects, offering an opportunity to discuss items. Sensory play also helps kids with cognitive skills like sorting, counting, and categorizing. Fine motor skills are also used when kids scoop, pour and grasp using their hands, fingers, and tools, which are the building blocks toward writing!
